"The pattering of small feet weaves through the withering corn husks, squelching in the mud and leaping over fallen roots. Hazik and Pompo follow Tokdyn through the maze, dancing around his feet like imps. Once human children, they got lost in the cornstalks and never found their way out. Now they are tasked with luring other children–and the occasional unsuspecting adult–to meet with the same fate. Their shriveled corpses can no longer stand up on their own, so they wear the gourds that Tokdyn gave them to keep their bodies upright. They play games together in the maze, hide-and-seek and leap-frog, cackling and whooping like foxes in the cold autumn night. "
